Avoiding Taboo Colloquialisms and Prioritizing Cultural Competence

April 23 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

In today’s increasingly diverse and multicultural workplace, cultural competence is essential. Understanding how language can offend or alienate others is critical to maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment. The use of negative cultural colloquialisms and microaggressions—especially those rooted in racial, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation, or socio-economic stereotypes—can lead to tension, workplace conflict, and claims of bullying, harassment, and a hostile work environment.  As such, in order to minimize liability, employers must take a proactive stance against the use of such language, and make cultural competence a priority.

Join us for a KSB Law Lunch & Learn where we will explore the impact of negative cultural colloquialisms and microaggressions as well as the role inclusive language and communication practices plays in minimizing legal risk and promoting equity, respect, and belonging.

This session will cover:

  • The importance of cultural competence in the workplace
  • Understanding and respecting different cultures and customs
  • Identifying and avoiding harmful cultural colloquialisms
  • Recognizing and addressing microaggressions
  • Promoting inclusive, respectful communication
  • Fostering cultural awareness and promoting workplace diversity

This program takes place on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. ET. Please note that this program is pending SHRM and NJ CLE credit.
